Manborg 2013
MANBORG: 80′s CHEESE AGED TO PERFECTION
In order to understand Manborg we must first discuss the Canadian film production company Astron-6. Astron-6 was founded in 2007 by Adam Brooks and Jeremy Gillespie. Matt Kennedy, Connor Sweeney and Steven Kostanski later joined making Astron-6 what it is now, a five man film making team that creates low-budget films that have a 1980′s vibe. The films combine Horror, Sci Fi and Comedy. Basically its a bunch of talented guys that have the same love of genre films from the 80′s. Astron-6 makes the films they want on the cheap. This may… Continue reading
Ticks 1993
TICKS: “THEY CALL ME PANIC CAUSE I NEVER DO”
I love the mutated animal monster sub-genre because it tends to straddle Horror and Science Fiction. In the late 1980′s and early 1990′s we saw a lot of it. Maybe it was because of the maturity of the special effects industry that had developed during the eighties that could deliver more effective monsters cheaply or maybe it was just something that happened. These movies existed before the late 80′s and early 90′s. I would cite one my favorites Prophecy (1979). The thing is that the movies from late 80′s and… Continue reading
The Nest 1988
THE NEST: COCKROACHES… FROM THE DEEP?
The Nest is a film that belongs in the mutated animal subset of the monster film genre. It came near the end of the 80′s but it reeks of ”cheese” and that is a good thing if you enjoy stinky 80′s cheese. The film is written by Robert King from a novel by Eli Cantor and directed by Terence H. Winkless. It is worth noting the film is produced by Julie Corman who is the wife of Roger Corman. Roger Corman is the low budget genre film king producing scores of films… Continue reading
Galaxy of Terror 1981
GALAXY OF TERROR: CORMAN LOW BUDGET GOODNESS
In the days before cable channels devoted to genre film like Fearnet, Chiller, Sy Fy, Netflix and Internet web streaming, we had to go to our local video store to hunt down new film genre titles. Before that people would visit their local movie house that would play these types of film or visit the Drive In where these types of films usually played. In 60′s, 70′s and early 80′s Drive Ins and Movie theaters needed a constant flow of films to play so they could sell tickets to the masses. There… Continue reading
Adam Chaplin 2011
ADAM CHAPLIN: HEAVEN VALLEY… ANYTHING BUT HEAVEN
Adam Chaplin is an Italian film written and directed by Emanuelle De Santi. Not only does De Santi write and direct but he also stars in the film as Adam Chaplin the title character. It doesn’t end there as De Santi also receives a Prosthetics/Animatronics Effects Director and Director of Photography credit. If you sit through the credits of the film you will also see that the guy writes all the music for the film. De Santi does it all. His brother Giulio De Santi appears in the film as Derek and… Continue reading
Splinter 2008
SPLINTER: SPINY HORROR FUN
Splinter is a film from 2008 written by Ian Shorr (Rigged (2008)) and Kai Barry. Splinter is directed by Toby Wilkins who worked in visual effects and title sequence design (Rush Hour 2 (2001), The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002), Red Dragon (2002), Bulletproof Monk (2003), Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) and others. Since turning to directing he has churned out some shorts and some television work. As far as feature films go he has directed Splinter and The Grudge 3 (2009). Not exactly a solid Horror pedigree but the visual effects… Continue reading
Storage 24 2012
STORAGE 24: STORAGE UNIT MONSTER MAYHEM
I love films about ghosts, zombies, slashers, demons and devils, killer children, killer parents and everything in between. People that love movies and are willing to dabble in Horror film or the darker side cinema will find something they like within the Horror genre and stay away from what scares them ghosts, zombies or whatever. I have always been attracted to what scares me most in Horror cinema. I am not repelled I am attracted to what scares me in Horror cinema. Therefore I enjoy the Horror genre in its totality. As much… Continue reading
Split Second 1992
SPLIT SECOND: POOR MAN’S 80′s MICHAEL MANN SCI FI
The first time I witnessed the awesome screen presence of Rutger Hauer was in Nighthawks (1981). Even though it was a Sylvester Stallone film, there was no doubt that the real highlight was Rutger Hauer’s Wulfgar. Hauer next appeared in the film that made him famous to genre nerds around the world for many years to come… the amazing Blade Runner (1982). Hauer’s Roy Batty is inarguably amazing and makes Blader Runner the memorable film that it is. An amazing contribution to an amazing film. This put Hauer on the… Continue reading
Night of the Creeps 1986
NIGHT OF THE CREEPS: THRILL ME
Night of the Creeps was a film that eluded me for many years. In the days of the video store, I remember vaguely seeing the VHS video box cover art along side the scores of other titles but I never took a chance on it and gave it a watch. DVD took over, the video stores disappeared and lost was this title. In the late 1990′s as the Internet began to take over our lives, I began to read more and more about Night of the Creeps. This film became a must… Continue reading
Hypothermia 2010
HYPOTHERMIA: THROWBACK MONSTER FUN
I love the monster movie mostly because it was the first type of genre film that I was exposed to as a kid. Black and white monster flicks on a Saturday afternoon was all I needed to be happy. Giant ants, giant spiders, Godzilla, aliens from space, frozen prehistoric monsters unleashed and everything in between. I love them all. James Felix McKenney’s Hypothermia was a film that I had been looking forward to because I knew that it was a monster film. The fact that Michael Rooker was part of the production was… Continue reading
The Mist 2007
THE MIST: ONE FATHER’S APOCALYPTIC NIGHTMARE
Before beginning I have to mention that I have not always been a fan of some of the Stephan King film adaptations. I know people love Pet Sematary (1989) and It (1990) but I have always felt that those films started out great but the interest is not kept through the finale. I flat out have no love for Thinner (1996). Children of the Corn did nothing for me. I find Cujo (1983) to be and intolerable bore. Needful Things (1993) and the Dark Half 91993) were just so so. There are… Continue reading
The Devil’s Business 2011
THE DEVIL’S BUSINESS: DEVILISHLY TALKY GENRE GOODNESS
Watching movies can sometimes feel a lot like Christmas. That feeling of being handed a gift form under the tree not knowing what is inside. The excitement and anticipation of what could be inside the box brings giddy joy. Yes, sometimes it is a let down like pulling out a pair of gym socks from the box. I’m talking to you Chernobyl Diaries. Just kidding… well maybe not. Anyway, most of the time opening that box wrapped in pretty paper is a lot of fun. This is what it felt like… Continue reading
